Entry to the United Kingdom – Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

From 2 April 2025, most travellers to the United Kingdom are required to have an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the country. This also applies to citizens of EU countries, who previously could travel visa-free.

An ETA is not a visa, but an electronic travel authorisation that must be approved before departure. It allows short stays in the UK (up to 6 months), including for tourism, business travel and conference attendance.

Key information:

  • The ETA must be applied for online prior to travel
  • The fee is approximately £16
  • It is normally valid for 2 years or until your passport expires
  • Without a valid ETA, travellers may be denied boarding

You do not need an ETA if you:

  • hold a British or Irish passport
  • have a valid UK visa or residence permit

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the official UK government channels:

You will need your passport, a digital photo, and to answer a few security questions.

Please beware of unofficial websites that may charge higher fees.

NB: We recommend applying well in advance of your travel to ensure a smooth journey.
